As the festive season of Chinese New Year rolls around, Singapore’s iconic Gardens by the Bay is set to dazzle locals and tourists alike with its enchanting floral spectacle, “Dahlia Dreams”. From now until March 5th, the Flower Dome, one of the crowning jewels of Gardens by the Bay, transforms into a whimsical landscape. Imagine stepping into a world where over 1,000 dahlias of 40 different varieties are in full bloom, their vibrant colours painting a breathtaking tableau against the backdrop of the dome’s unique architecture.

One of the key highlights of Dahlia Dreams is the mighty dragon sculpture that emerges amongst the lush greenery. This isn’t just any dragon; it’s a symbol of power, strength, and good luck, making it a fitting centrepiece for the Year of the Dragon.

Prepare to be enchanted by unique dahlia varieties such as the “Gloriosa”, which resembles a paintbrush with its creamy yellow petals flecked with bold red. Then there’s the aptly named “Duet”, boasting two-toned purple and white petals that create a stunning contrast. And let’s not forget the “Kenora Lisa”, a multi-hued dahlia with peach petals that transition to a pretty pink at the tips. Each of these flowers has its own charm and beauty, demanding equal attention from visitors.

As you step into the dome, your gaze will be instantly captivated by the monumental 6-meter-tall dragon sculpture, “The Bearer of Infinite Blessings”. This masterpiece is the work of acclaimed British sculptor James Doran-Webb, known for his ability to breathe life into inanimate materials. Constructed from over 2,000 repurposed wood pieces and stainless steel, this stunning beast took a mammoth 9,000 hours to complete. As wisps of smoke emanate from its flared nostrils amidst a serene water feature, this dragon symbolizes the boundless prosperity and renewal of spring.

After bestowing blessings upon Dahlia Dreams visitors this Chinese New Year, the mythical creature will embark on a journey to the United Kingdom. There, it will be showcased at the esteemed RHS Chelsea Flower Show, allowing visitors from all around the world to admire its craftsmanship and symbolism.

Venture further through the flower field, and you’ll gasp in awe at the monumental 7-meter tall, 15-meter-wide wood dragon centrepiece emerging mightily amongst the dahlias. Its body is beautifully adorned with shimmering floral “scales”, meticulously handcrafted by over 30 seniors living with dementia and their selfless caregivers from Dementia Singapore. Over the course of a week, they came together to create these scales using preserved hydrangeas, lunarias, and statice in the traditional Chinese New Year colours of red and yellow. Their handiwork breathes life into this ancient beast, symbolizing the power of community and the human spirit.

Four vibrant dragon lantern sets spread around the area aim to catch the eye, each representing the natural elements of metal, water, fire, and earth. In addition to these lantern sets, there will also be a dragon dance lantern display featuring two roaring beasts, drums, and two poles with a sphere at the top, representing a pearl. These displays add a touch of tradition and culture to the event, creating a festive atmosphere that’s perfect for family outings or romantic dates.

Auspicious Chinese New Year flowers like marigolds, camellias, and fuzzy pussy willows further infuse this floral cornucopia with additional festive spirit. Surrounded by flowers symbolizing prosperity and joy, this Chinese New Year promises a spring awakening to remember.

With ancient dragons frolicking playfully amongst the vibrant dahlias, a scene of carps visually signifies the Chinese saying 鱼跃龙门, which translates into “carps leap over the dragon gate”. This metaphor for courage and the pursuit of greatness in the face of adversity perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Dahlia Dreams. This event offers a breathtaking experience that appeals to all ages. Make a date with loved ones to soak in the boundless natural abundance and take a moment to make a wish for the year ahead. Let the ethereal beauty renew your spirit and cleanse your soul as you step into the promise of the new year. This is more than just a visit; it’s an experience that will leave you with memories to cherish. So come, step into the world of Dahlia Dreams, and let nature’s beauty take your breath away.
